Owing to the pressure from various corners, finally, the makers of forthcoming epic period-drama Padmavati has announced that the movie will not hit the screens on December 1st as per the original plan. Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind Padmavati, has stated that it has voluntarily deferred the film’s release from 1 December 2017. In an official statement it said that the new release date would be announced soon.
Set in medieval Rajasthan, Rajput Queen Padmavati is married to a noble king and they live in a prosperous fortress with their subjects until an ambitious Sultan(Alauddin Khilji) hears of Padmavati’s beauty and forms an obsessive love for the Queen of Mewar. This is one popular version of the historical story besides several other contrary stories.
The historic period drama is being directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with a massive budget in a lavish scale. Already the film’s trailer became a big hit. Ranveer Singh is seen as menacing Sultan, while Shahid essays the role of a noble king, Padmavati’s husband. Naturally, the story has not gone down well with religious groups, fringe who have been objecting the film since its inception.
The film has been mired in controversies with a section of people from Rajasthan (Rajputs) have threatened the makers with dire consequences if the film is released. Threats were made to the film’s lead actress Deepika Padukone that her nose would be cut off. Even during the film’s shoot, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was beaten up and later the film’s set was set on fire incurring a great financial loss.
The Rajput community has claimed that the makers have distorted history and has been demanding to stall the film’s release. With various threats and controversies, Viacom18 has come forward to postpone the film’s release.
