AP has no right to supply Krishna water to Rayalaseema: Telangana

While the Andhra Pradesh government is busy gearing up to conduct the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls on April 11, the Telangana government witnesses deposed before the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal to present their arguments. This move has irked Andhra Pradesh officials as Telangana witnesses stated that the four districts in Rayalaseema do not have any right on Krishna water.

The Brijesh Kumar Tribunal is hearing the heated argument over sharing the Krishna waters by the AP and Telangana states. The Telangana witnesses said, “The four districts in Rayalaseema and the Prakasam district in Krishna ayacut do not fall in the catchment area of Krishna river and so, they need not be given water. These districts do not have a right to use the Krishna water.”

They also said that allocation of Krishna water to the Kurnool-Kadapa (KC) canal, Mucchumarri, Handri-Neeva, Galeru-Nagari Sujala Sravanti, Telugu Ganga was against the policy. They also demanded closure of Pothireddypadu head regulator canals and Mucchumarri LI scheme, which is supplied with Srisailam backwaters. They took objection to the allocation of Krishna water to Veligonda project too. The witnesses also sought management of Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam projects, under the Krishna Water Management Board.

According to the Bachawat Award, undivided AP was allocated 811 tmc Krishna water. Of this, 299 tmc was given to Telangana and 512 to AP, as per the Division Law. The Telangana government seems to be ignoring all these rules and arguing to suit its needs now. On the other hand, what has shocked the Tribunal members is that Telangana’s objection to how AP is using the water.

The AP government believes that its share of water is being used efficiently to drought-proof Rayalaseema and that the government has the right to divert the water based on the state’s needs. Unfortunately, the whole argument from Telangana seemed like it has a problem with how AP is using its water, rather than following the regulations!
