It appears the Telugu Desam Party which has suffered a huge setback in the recent assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, is facing a major crisis internally, though it is yet to erupt in full scale.
The uneasy calm in the party was evident from the way several leaders skipped the TDP workshop convened by party president and former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at Vijayawada on Tuesday.
Prominent among those who were conspicuous by their absence was Vijayawada MP Kesineni Nani, former Union minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju, former state minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, former MP J C Diwakar Reddy and others.
Though the party leaders are trying to play down their absence saying they had prior engagements and health issues, it is learnt they are not very keen on taking active part in the party activities.
At the same time, senior TDP leader Gorantla Buchaiah Chowdary created a sensation of sorts by announcing that he would quit as the deputy leader of the TD legislature party. He said it would be better the post was given to a Backward Classes leaders.
Gorantla criticised the party leadership for encouraging those who had lost several times.
“They had become white elephants and unless they are dropped, the party cannot survive. It is time seniors should make way for juniors and youth,” he suggested.
The senior MLA said there was something wrong with the party which had lost power despite taking up welfare and developmental programmes.
“The party leadership at the district and mandal levels and also ministers had miserably failed. The party president encouraged selected few in posts and positions, whereas present chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is encouraging only party workers. That is the difference,” he said.
