Traffic Challans: States Shocks Modi

The new Motor Vehicle Act 2019 that was introduced brought uproar from all corners of the country. Commuters are demanding the government to lay some quality roads and then collect the penalties from traffic offenders.

Right after it was implemented in few states, commuters expressed anger for taking thousands of Rupees in the form of challans. The respective state government has brought this to the notice of the centre but as the government is in no mood to change the rules, the states are amending the law on their own terms.

PM Modi’s own state Gujarat is the first state in the country to introduce a law to bring down the penalties by nearly ninety percent. This brought an embarrassment to the Modi government in New Delhi. Then West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that her government will not carry out this law in her state.

However, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is unimpressed with state governments. “To those states who are refusing to enforce the fines, isn’t life more important than money? This was done to save lives,” said Gadkari. Defending the huge penalties, he further said people need to have fear of law but left the option to state governments, whether to implement new Motor Vehicle Act.
