On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative Rs 150 coins in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He was also there for the ‘Swachh Bharat Diwas’ programme in Sabarmati Riverfront.
A commemorative coin is issued only on major occasions with distinctive design in reference to the event. Modi left a message on the visitor’s book at Sabarmati Ashram which read, “I’m satisfied that on the occasion of #GandhiAt150, we’re witnessing the fulfillment of his dream of ‘Swachh Bharat’. I feel lucky that on this occasion when India has successfully stopped open defecation.”
Along with PM, Chief Miniter Vijay Rupani was also present at the launching. PM Modi, back in January, had released a commemorative coin of Rs 350 to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, the ten preachers of the Sikh religion.
Even before that, in 2018, Modi released a commemorative Rs 100 coin in memory of former and late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
