More than a biopic, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is now known as a classic wartime epic and fictional period drama, leaving history lovers spellbound. This magnum opus had Megastar Chiranjeevi and veteran superstar Amitabh Bachchan together on the big screen. It is a known fact that both of them share a great rapport since long. But to convince Big B for Sye Raa, Chiru had to take help from someone else.
Though they are friends, Chiru says he becomes nervous speaking to Amitabh as he is like a mentor to him. Sye Raa team, who thought Big B would suit perfectly for the role of Gosayi Venkanna in the film, requested Chiranjeevi to call up Amitabh Bachchan and ask him if we would play the character. “I said I could not take advantage of our friendship. He’s like my mentor. So, I cannot go and simply ask him,” quoted Chiranjeevi.
But director Surender Reddy requested Chiru to try calling Big B. However, Megastar was unsure if Big B would accept playing 5-days character. He said, “As a member of Parliament, I went and met Jaya Bachchanji who was present there. I told her that I wanted to talk to Big B to which she replied ‘You can talk to him.’ I said, ‘No, no it’s an embarrassing situation. I requested, ‘Can you please tell him that I want to talk to him’. She said, ‘Just SMS him, he will revert.”
He further said that after texting him, Big B immediately replied, following Chiru telling what he had in mind. “I said this is just five-days work for a character and you have to accept it. He asked, ‘Do you believe that I will be suitable for that character?’ I said yes sir. I can’t imagine anyone other than you in it. He said, ‘I am doing it’.”
Their conversation depicts a great bonding between them as Chiru said he cannot imagine anyone else in a mentor’s place, be it a film or in real life. Finally, Amitabh played the role of Guru Gosayi Venkanna, Chiru’s mentor, in the film. Sye Raa’s mania is so high that people feel truly connected to history by immersing themselves in fictionalized storyline rather than straightforward factual reports. The emotional weight in the film has been portrayed dramatically well.
