On-demand video streaming service such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HotStar and others are likely to come under censor scanner as the union government is thinking so. Currently, OTT platforms don’t fall under censorship unlike the film and TV.
In the recent times many cases were filed against certain web-series and shows alleging that the content is obscene and insulting religious sentiments. Web-series like ‘Sacred Games’, ‘Mirzapur’ and ‘The Family Man’ have sparked a lot of controversies over the content and even on the dialogues.
With complaints piling up over online streaming shows, the ministry of information and broadcasting is seriously considering to impose censorship on Netflix, Amazon Prime and others. A new set of regulations are likely to come effective on the OTT platforms and maybe the web-series also need to get formal approval to get aired in the platforms in the future.
A decision on it will be taken soon, said an I&B ministry official.
