Unlike the long-followed tradition, Tirupati temples will soon witness non-Brahmin priests taking charge. It is reported that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has trained and is ready with its first batch mainly of SC and ST priests. TTD has trained the priests for three months where more than 200 belongs to Dalit and backward communities.
“The management is going to appoint SC, ST priests in temples governed by it very soon,” TTD executive officer Anil Singhal said. Tirupati temples have always been the most expensive, powerful and popular in the world and this move came unprecedented, especially under Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tenure as the Chief Minister. Many have also appreciated the change as Hindu priesthood was reserved for Brahmins since time immemorial.
Singhal said in a press conference that the desire of other castes is now been fulfilled and we made it into a reality. TTD will also construct 5oo temples in SC, ST and fisherman colonies along with the Endowment department. However, the move has also become debatable with some saying that Dalits have other things to do and priesthood is not really something they learn.
A few on the internet also bought Vedas, pointing out purification right from childhood. But, if one may realize, scheduled caste communities are priests in many of the temples like Ayyanar, Mariamman, Durga Devi and a few village temples in Tamil Nadu. These temples for centuries are being maintained and run by communities in SC list.
