Jagan balances ‘Freebies’ by Tariff Hikes

In another shock, the YSRCP government has hiked the tariff of electricity. The hiked tariffs are applicable to users above 500 units monthly. Also after 500 units usage, one unit would cost 90 paisa more which means instead of the current rate which is Rs 9.05 paisa, the unit would cost Rs 9.95 paisa.

Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) took this decision in a meeting after DISCOMS have made it clear that the tariffs should be hiked or else they would go into huge losses. The hike can be seen as a balancing act of AP CM YS Jagan led YSRCP government’s welfare schemes i.e, freebies. For schemes like ‘Amma Vodi’ Rythu Bharosa, YSR Cheyutha, Village Volunteers, YSR Nethanna Nestham and Arogya Sri, all of them need huge funds.

For the year 2020-2021, Jagan government has allocated a budget of Rs 6318 crore for Amma Vodi scheme and so just imagine the case of other welfare schemes.

But the YSRCP government is reducing its prime revenue generator which is excise department. In order to compensate this, recently the government has increased the tax on fuel. The value added tax (VAT) on petrol was increased from 31 percent to 35.20 percent and on diesel, it was 22.25 percent and now it is at 27 percent. Then the APSRTC charges were also hiked and later the transport authority was dissolved with the state government.

Now the tariff of electricity is hiked. This hike may not impact the common man much but would burn the pockets of commercial users and also investors. In the coming days, the government may consider other departments under its wings to create revenue from its own sources.
