No NPR Survey In Telangana?

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi government in Telangana headed by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is learnt to have kept on hold the implementation of National Population Register for now, keeping in view the apprehensions among the people, especially the Muslim minorities.

According to the reports in a section of media, the KCR government would write to the Centre to follow the old census model while taking up 2021 census, instead of seeking controversial information from the people in the name of NPR.

“If necessary, a resolution to this effect would be adopted in the state assembly during the budget session,” these reports said.

Apparently, the chief minister has received a number of complaints from MIM and other sources that the questions being posed to citizens as part of census enumeration were controversial and might create apprehensions among the Muslims.

He is said to have strongly opposed the new format of NPR and hence, decided to write to the centre against implementing it. The state government would also adopt another resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The State government has opposed the CAA in the parliament and it also wants to take up the NPR work in old format without the objectionable questions.

West Bengal and Kerala have decided to put NPR work on hold and Telangana would follow suit.

The sources added that though the States cannot stop the NPR work, the move to stop all the activities with regard to NPR would bring some pressure on the Centre to make some modifications in the new NPR format.
