Jagan finds better day for house-sites programme!

State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar’s orders asking the state government to put off YSR Congress party government’s flagship programme of house sites’ distribution on March 25, coinciding with Ugadi day, on the pretext of model code of conduct for local body elections came as a blessing in disguise for YSRC president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Jagan, who fretted and fumed at Ramesh Kumar for deferring the programme and complained Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan against the SEC orders, would anyway have to postpone the programme because of Coronavirus scare and the directions from the Centre for avoiding all public gatherings.

In fact, nothing would have prevented Jagan from going ahead with the house sites distribution on Ugadi because the SEC was forced to lift the model code of conduct following the Supreme Court directions.

But Jagan has wisely thought it won’t be appropriate to organise the event since it would result in mass gatherings in every village, which goes against the Central government’s guidelines.

So, Jagan chose to defer the programme. However, he found a better day to take up the programme – it will now be April 14, which will coincide with the birth anniversary of Babasaheb B R Ambedkar.

An official communication from the chief minister’s office said Jagan has decided to conduct the government’s prestigious programme of distributing house-site pattas for 26.6 lakh poor people on April 14 to coincide with Ambedkar Jayanthi.

He asked the officials to ensure that there should be a social distance while showing sites to the beneficiaries. About 26.6 lakh beneficiaries will get house site pattas with clear title with registration.

While such a prestigious project is taken up by the government to benefit the poor, a few people are trying to politicize the event and are creating hurdles to the poor by filing cases in the court. The Chief Minister instructed the officials that government arguments should be strong.

If the programme is conducted on April 14, it will fetch a big mileage to the YSRC government because many of the beneficiaries belong to Dalit communities and it would be a tribute for Ambedkar as well.
