It is not wrong to say that the much-talked-about sedition charges are attracting the attention of the people of the country. The trend of sedition charges has made its way to Andhra Pradesh with the infamous row of YSRCP rebel MP Raghurama Krishnam Raju.
Earlier, the Supreme Court said that there is a need to examine the interpretation of the sedition law, as several cases in connection with the charges are pending with the court of law.
Now one more sedition case was filed on Thursday against filmmaker Ayesha Sulthana on the charges of spreading false news on Covid spread in Lakshadweep, a union territory, based on a complaint filed by a BJP leader.
The Lakshadweep Police registered a complaint after Lakshadweep BJP chief Abdul Khader. He claimed that, during a TV debate, Sulthana alleged that to spread the Covid virus in Lakshadweep, the centre used biological weapons.
The BJP leaders have demanded strict action against the filmmaker for making such statements and called for a protest on Friday.
The sedition law can attract imprisonment, which might be extended up to three years. In addition to imprisonment, a fine may also be included.
