A lot of studies conducted in the past had found that compared to women, men are more vulnerable to the Covid-19 virus and the chances of coming in contact with the pandemic are more in men than women.Now the researchers are saying that men have one more thing to worry about concerning the Covid. Men who have low testosterone levels are at more risk and the risk of losing life is also high among men with low testosterone levels than those who have high testosterone.
The researchers at the famous San Raffaele University Hospital in Italy’s Milan have carried out a study to know the risk among men based on the testosterone levels they have. Men with different testosterone levels were examined as part of the study.
As per the researchers, the chances of getting ill and getting hospitalized for treatment will increase in men as testosterone levels go down. Men with low testosterone levels are also at the risk of staying for longer periods at the hospitals and breathing their last due to Covid.
To understand the link between the testosterone levels in men and the Covid risk, the researchers have examined 286 male patients of the dreaded Covid at the emergency department and compared their samples with healthy men.
As part of the study, the researchers examined 305 healthy men between February and May last year. Their samples were compared with the Covid patients at the emergency department.
Out of the 286 patients, around 90 percent of them had testosterone levels less than 9.2 nanomoles per litre (nmol/l). This translates to a mere 17 percent of testosterone levels in healthy men. The study said, people with 3-4 nmol/l of testosterone levels developed mild symptoms or were shifted to hospitals.
Men with 0.7-1.0 nmol/l were either admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) department of the hospital or lost their lives to the Coronavirus disease, the study said.
The researchers added that testosterone acts as a shield from protecting men from the virus and maintained that the virus has the ability to bring down the testosterone levels in men making them more vulnerable to respiratory disease.
