Sabitha’s class for girls

Home minister Sabitha Indra Reddy here in Hyderabad said beginning from the next academic year ,all upper primary and high schools may have to train girls in self-defence as a measure to equip them to deal with eve-teasing in public spaces.In addition to the 108 service that will be shortly activated to register complaints of eve-teasing,stalking and other forms of sexual harassment.Sabitha has proposed to train all girl students from class VII onwards in self-defence.Ms.Sabitha indra reddy discussed the proposal with chief minister,kiran kumar reddy and mooted that compulsory training in self defence forms such as karate and judo be made part of the curriculum from the new academic year,along with sports and physical education.

It will give confidence and embolden girls to report any form of sexual harassment rather than silently suffer the humiliation.A moral science class will also be part of the daily time-table from elementary school itself,she said.A formal proposal will be submitted to the chief minister in a couple of days,she told.The popular 108 service would make it easier for women to immediately report any menace.The 108 call centre in turn would alert the police station concerned based on the address given by the complainant.Finally she concluded more importantly, teaching children to respect gender equality should begin at home itself.
