Devi Sri Prasad and Thaman’s interesting comments on Bollywood

Not so long ago, speaking at a promotional event pertaining to Balakrishna’s Akhanda, the music composer of the film, Thaman made a very interesting comment about Bollywood.

“In Bollywood, every film’s audio album is a collaborative effort. Multiple music directors work on the same album. One song is composed by a noted musician, and the other is composed by some other composer. I don’t understand this model. One film should have only one music composer, much like how we do in the South Indian film industry,: Thaman said as he ridiculed Bollywood’s music production model.

Now, Thaman’s counterpart, Devi Sri Prasad has made a very similar comment when asked about the music composition procedure followed in Bollywood.

“There was a time in Bollywood when legends like RD Burman and AR Rahman used to compose the entire audio album and also the background score for films. But that isn’t the case now. The makers bring one music composer from somewhere and ask him to compose one song. Then they go after another music director for the other song. I am not quite aligned with this system. I believe that only one music composer should be in charge of the respective film’s audio album and background score.” DSP said.

Devi went on to make another interesting statement that validates his stance on Bollywood music production. “If a song from a film’s audio album gets a good respone, the audience should know that the music composer is responsible for the same. But if several music composers work on the same film, the audience will not even know who who composed which song.”

Well, both Devi Sri Prasad and Thaman, who are the two stlawarts of the Telugu music industry are now making very similar statements on the music production model in Bollywood. Both of them have very good points to make. It remains to be seen if Bollywood will take cue from the same.

As for Thaman, he is currently busy with several biggies like Radhe Shyam (backgrond score), RC15, Sarkaru Vaai Paata, and Bheemla Nayak. On the other hand, Devi Sri Prasad recently scored a hit with Allu Arjun’s Pushpa: The Rise.
