Vizag Andhra’s new AIDS capital

Vizag the place famous for its large scale industries ,beaches is now facing tough challenges as recent survey found that it tops in HIV cases in Andhra Pradesh,Despite massive campaingn by government and non-govermental organizations the incidence of HIV is on the rise in the city of destiny.All the 23 districts of AP have been placed under category ‘A’ as They have more than 1-2 percent ante-natal prevalence in the last three years.

According to government statistics the state has more than 4 lackh HIV positive cases.It might increase since the campaigning and awareness has been stopped due to break in The funding,in recent years as the agriculture sector was showing less production and resulting in less work,many prople from neighbouring districts were coming for work to Vizag.These workers earn handful of money in the city and due to peer pressure start taking alcohol and purchase sex from a worker or have sexual relation with an un-paid co-worker. We found that 74 percent of the migrant workers had sex at work spot,68 percent reported consuming alcohol,out of which 45 percent said they used alcohol before sexual act with a sex worker or unpaid co-worker during last month.
