The sacred Tirumala shrine, revered by millions of devotees, has recently found itself at the center of political controversy. Following the infamous Laddu contamination incident, political figures visiting the shrine have increasingly used the platform to issue statements, sparking a contentious debate.
In a move to preserve the sanctity of the shrine, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board, under the leadership of its newly appointed chairman, issued an order prohibiting political statements within the premises of Tirumala. The directive emphasized maintaining the spiritual focus of the location and warned of strict legal action against violators.
However, this policy was challenged today by BRS leader and former minister, Srinivas Goud, who made provocative remarks during his visit to the shrine. Speaking at Tirumala, Goud claimed, “Tirumala is a place of worship for the entire Hindu community. We from Telangana have long upheld traditions here, including head tonsure rituals. But recently, we’ve observed a growing bias against Telangana’s people, politicians, and businessmen. Telangana visitors are not being treated with the respect they deserve.”
He further called upon Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to address the issue, stating it was his responsibility to ensure fairness at the holy site.
These remarks not only contravene the TTD’s directive but have also stirred strong reactions from devotees and social media users. Many have criticized Goud’s statements as inflammatory and potentially disruptive to regional harmony. A prominent social media comment read: “If he has genuine concerns, he should address them formally with the TTD board or the state government. Public statements at such a revered site are inappropriate and could provoke unnecessary tensions.”
TTD Chairman B.R. Naidu has previously assured the public that legal action would be taken against anyone violating the shrine’s apolitical policy. The focus now shifts to the board’s response to Goud’s comments, as devotees await decisive action to uphold the sanctity of Tirumala.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by the TTD in preserving the spiritual essence of Tirumala amid increasing political incursions. It remains to be seen how this episode will influence future measures to safeguard the sanctity of the shrine.
