TRAI fines Jio, Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Idea for not being able to control spam: Report


The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has imposed fines amounting to ₹12 crore on major telecom operators, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), BSNL, and other smaller entities. The penalties have been issued under the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) for failing to adequately address the growing issue of spam calls and messages.

Accumulated Dues and Enforcement Challenges
With the latest fines, the total penalties levied on telecom operators have reached ₹141 crore. However, the affected companies have yet to settle these dues. TRAI has formally requested the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to recover the outstanding amount by invoking the bank guarantees of these operators. The DoT’s decision on this matter remains pending.
