Another Wicket Down For YCP!

The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) continues to face a significant exodus of senior leaders, with recent departures highlighting a growing trend that shows no signs of abating. Following the exits of prominent figures such as Alla Nani and Balineni Srinivasa Reddy, the party has now lost another key member—Imtiaz Ahmed. The former IAS officer, who contested the Kurnool assembly seat on the YSRCP ticket in the 2024 elections, announced his resignation from the party today, further intensifying concerns within the party.

Imtiaz Ahmed’s entry into politics was marked by his decision to leave a distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He was given the Kurnool MLA ticket by Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in the party’s first term, despite not having a political background. However, his debut electoral journey ended in a heavy defeat, as YSRCP lost the Kurnool seat, a constituency that had been a stronghold for the party in the previous two elections. The loss was particularly notable given the party’s strong track record in the region, prompting questions about the strategic decisions that led to his candidacy.

The decision to field Imtiaz Ahmed was controversial, as it sidelined key party members like SV Mohan Reddy and former MLA Hafeez Khan, who were vying for the ticket. This move proved to be a misstep, contributing to YSRCP’s downfall in Kurnool. With Imtiaz stepping away from politics altogether, his resignation adds to the growing list of setbacks for the party.

In contrast, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) saw a significant win in Kurnool, with TG Bharath, a trusted ally of N. Chandrababu Naidu, securing the seat and subsequently being inducted into the cabinet. This shift further intensifies the pressure on YSRCP, as it loses ground in what was once considered a stronghold.

As the YSRCP grapples with internal turmoil and a series of leadership exits, the party’s ability to maintain its influence in key constituencies like Kurnool will be critical to its future political prospects.
