Wildfires Delay 2025 Oscar Nominations and Events
The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have prompted a delay in the announcement of the 2025 Oscar nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the nominee voting period, originally scheduled to end on January 12, to January 14, in light of the ongoing crisis affecting many in the film industry and the region.
The announcement of nominees, initially set for January 17, will now take place on January 19. Academy CEO Bill Kramer expressed heartfelt sympathies to those impacted by the wildfires, which have caused widespread destruction, displaced thousands, and claimed numerous lives. Over 1,000 buildings have been destroyed in the disaster, leaving Southern California reeling.
In addition to the revised nomination timeline, several Oscar-related events have been affected. The International Feature Shortlist Screening and various category-specific bake-offs have been postponed due to safety concerns. Despite these challenges, the Academy remains committed to ensuring that all members can fully participate in the voting process.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony is still set to take place on March 2, 2025. Amid these hardships, the Academy has reaffirmed its resilience and dedication to celebrating cinematic excellence while supporting its members during this difficult time.
