Sharmila Protests, Demands Amit Shah’s Resignation Over Ambedkar Remarks

YS Sharmila, President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), staged a silent protest in Visakhapatnam on Friday to condemn the controversial remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which she claimed belittled Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution.

Sharmila’s protest was a direct response to Shah’s comments, and she demanded his immediate resignation from his ministerial position. She further called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Shah from the Cabinet if he failed to step down voluntarily.

During the protest, Sharmila expressed her deep outrage, accusing almost every political party in Parliament—except the Congress—of being too intimidated to condemn Shah’s remarks. She specifically targeted the ruling coalition in Andhra Pradesh, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena, accusing them of remaining silent while Dr. Ambedkar, a symbol of hope for Dalit and backward communities, was disrespected. Sharmila pointed out that these parties had used Dalit and BC votes to gain political power but had failed to defend the legacy of Ambedkar when it was under attack.

Sharmila also directed her criticism at her brother, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Despite coming to power in 2019 with the backing of Dalits and BCs, she accused Jagan’s party of not speaking out against the derogatory remarks about Ambedkar. In a sharp remark, Sharmila claimed that Jagan’s party maintained an “illicit relationship” with the BJP, a connection she believed was reflected in their silence on the issue.

Emphasizing Dr. Ambedkar’s pivotal role in uniting India’s diverse religions and castes, Sharmila urged all political parties to reflect on his contributions and honor his legacy through their actions. She called for greater political courage in acknowledging the values Ambedkar instilled in the country, particularly in safeguarding the rights and dignity of marginalized communities.
