It is well-known that Telugu media outlets are often aligned with either the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) or YSR Congress Party (YCP), with Sakshi typically serving as a prominent mouthpiece for Jagan’s YCP. Sakshi has frequently been criticized for promoting the interests of the ruling party while casting a negative light on TDP. However, in a surprising turn of events, Sakshi has today (January 18) chosen to highlight TDP’s efforts with a full-page ad in their newspaper.
The front page features a prominent advertisement for TDP’s ongoing membership campaign, proudly proclaiming, “Under Lokesh’s leadership, TDP pays rich tribute to Sr. NTR through 1 crore memberships.” The page includes images of key TDP figures such as Lokesh, Chandrababu Naidu, N.T. Rama Rao (NTR), Nandamuri Balakrishna (Balayya), and Palla Srinivasa Rao. In the corner of the page, the names Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy and his wife Prashanthi Reddy appear, indicating they may have been behind the commissioning of this ad.
This move by Sakshi is noteworthy, considering the publication’s usual stance against TDP. It marks a striking departure from the paper’s typical editorial tone, which is often critical of the opposition. The timing is significant as well, coinciding with the TDP’s recent success in its membership drive, which has reportedly surpassed 1 crore registrations.
In an even more intriguing development, the Andhra Pradesh government has also rolled out a full-page ad in Sakshi, a publication typically associated with anti-TDP narratives. This gesture marks a shift from the previous approach during the YCP’s tenure, when rival publications like Eenadu and Andhra Jyothi were allegedly denied government advertisements from 2019-2024. The current government’s outreach, which includes ads in both pro- and anti-TDP publications, signals a more inclusive media strategy moving forward.
This unexpected shift in media dynamics showcases the evolving political landscape and suggests a broader, more strategic approach by the ruling party and government.
