Donald Trump’s Historic Return: Inauguration Highlights and Bold Policy Announcements


On Monday, President Donald Trump announced his intention to declare a national emergency at the southern border, aiming to immediately halt illegal entry into the United States and begin the process of returning individuals who entered the country unlawfully. He also revealed plans to deploy troops to secure the border.

President Trump was sworn into office by Chief Justice John Roberts, with J.D. Vance taking the oath as Vice President, administered by Justice Brett Kavanaugh. During his inaugural address, Trump emphasized his administration’s priorities, including border security, trade reforms, and nationalist policies.

Trump stated: “I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions of criminal aliens to their places of origin. We will reinstate the ‘remain in Mexico’ policy, end the practice of catch and release, and send troops to the southern border to repel what I call a disastrous invasion of our country.”

In addition to border security, Trump outlined plans for a sweeping overhaul of U.S. trade policies. He emphasized protecting American workers and families by shifting the financial burden from citizens to foreign nations. Trump said, “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will impose tariffs and taxes on foreign nations to benefit our own citizens. Massive funds will flow into our treasury from foreign sources, allowing the American dream to thrive like never before.”

Though he did not specify which tariffs or countries would be targeted, Trump stated that the reforms would “restore competence and effectiveness to the federal government.” He also announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” signaling a renewed focus on nationalist policies.

The inauguration ceremony took place indoors at the Capitol Rotunda, an uncommon move prompted by freezing temperatures. This marks only the second time in U.S. history that an inauguration has been held indoors, the first being in 1985 for President Ronald Reagan’s second term. Trump’s return to office also makes him the second U.S. president, after Grover Cleveland, to serve two non-consecutive terms.

The event was attended by several high-profile individuals, including Trump’s cabinet nominees such as Marco Rubio, Robert Kennedy Jr., Doug Burgum, Kristi Noem, and Pete Hegseth. Rubio is expected to be the first cabinet member confirmed, as early as Monday.

Prominent figures in attendance included General C.Q. Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, former Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, Elaine Chao, and former House Speakers Kevin McCarthy, John Boehner, and Newt Gingrich. Supporters gathered in Emancipation Hall and the Capitol Visitor Center, where overflow crowds watched the ceremony. Billionaires Sam Altman and Alexandr Wang, YouTube personalities Logan and Jake Paul, boxer Conor McGregor, comedian Theo Von, and former race car driver Danica Patrick were also present. Among the more controversial attendees was indicted New York Mayor Eric Adams.

The day began with a private service at St. John’s Church, attended by Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, and other members of the new administration. Although television cameras were barred from the service, released images showed Trump’s children, including Barron Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, and their respective spouses.

Several tech industry leaders, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and Google’s Sundar Pichai, were also in attendance. They later joined the formal swearing-in at the Capitol Rotunda.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama were present at the ceremony alongside their spouses, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. Notably absent was Michelle Obama. The event adhered to the tradition of former presidents attending inaugurations, a tradition broken by Trump in 2021 when he did not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration.
