Senior YSR Congress Party (YCP) leader Vijaya Sai Reddy has officially resigned from his Rajya Sabha seat, despite having more than three and a half years remaining in his tenure, which was set to conclude on June 21, 2028. His resignation makes him the fourth Rajya Sabha member from YSR Congress to step down.
Rajya Sabha seats are filled through elections held by the state assembly MLAs, and typically, these seats are allocated to parties within the ruling coalition, depending on the strength of the alliance. With Reddy’s resignation, speculation has intensified about which party within the coalition will claim the vacant seat.
Political analysts suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the most likely candidate to secure this seat, despite having only eight MLAs in the Andhra Pradesh assembly. The BJP’s national influence and political clout play a significant role in this scenario. In fact, the BJP has already won a Rajya Sabha seat from Andhra Pradesh, which was secured by R. Krishnayya, a former YSR Congress MP who switched allegiances to the BJP.
Amidst the growing speculation, the focus has shifted to potential candidates within the BJP. One prominent name being discussed is N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and senior BJP leader. If Reddy is nominated for the Rajya Sabha seat, it would be a strategic move to bolster the BJP’s presence in the Rayalaseema region, a stronghold of the opposition YSR Congress.
Experts believe that such a move would significantly strengthen the BJP’s political foothold in the region. Furthermore, there are reports suggesting that Kiran Kumar Reddy could also be appointed as the Andhra Pradesh BJP president. This dual appointment would not only solidify the party’s base in Rayalaseema but also enhance its overall influence across Andhra Pradesh.
