A R Rahman: 33 Years of Music and Unmatched Versatility

Share

A R Rahman made his debut in South Indian cinema with Roja in 1992 and entered Bollywood with Rangeela in 1995. Since then, his work has needed no introduction, earning him worldwide recognition for his music. His achievement of winning India’s first Oscar for music is legendary, cementing his status as one of the most respected and busiest music directors in India today.

Although M M Keeravani is two years senior to him, Rahman consistently takes on a far greater volume of work. Over his 33-year career, he has remained remarkably active, competing strongly with younger composers like Anirudh Ravichander and Thaman. While many younger music directors are known for quick, high-energy album releases, Rahman balances multiple major projects across several languages.

Currently, his schedule includes composing for Peddi (Telugu), Khoj (Hindi), Killer (Tamil), and an untitled Diljit Dosanjh film with Imtiaz Ali. One of his most ambitious projects is Ramayana: Part 1, on which he is collaborating with Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer. Even delayed or silent projects like Baab and Gandhi Talks remain under his supervision, highlighting the sheer scale of his workload.

Despite the rise of younger composers dominating social media and youth playlists, Rahman continues to be in high demand, maintaining a strong and enduring presence in Indian cinema.
