Tharun Bhascker’s Acting Shift Raises Concerns

Tharun Bhascker has built a distinct identity in Tollywood with just three films across a decade — Pelli Choopulu, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, and Keeda Cola. While these films may not have reshaped the industry, they earned him strong credibility and respect as a filmmaker with a unique voice.

However, in recent times, Tharun Bhascker has been shifting his focus more toward acting, and that move is beginning to raise concerns. Over the last few months, he has appeared twice in theatres as a solo lead, a decision that now seems to be backfiring.

His latest release, Gayapadda Simham, is struggling at the box office. Despite aggressive promotions across platforms, the film has failed to convert buzz into collections, with even weekend numbers falling short of expectations. From a producer’s perspective, this is a worrying sign.

The fundamental issue appears to be his limited market as a lead actor. Unlike established stars, Tharun Bhascker does not yet have a dedicated audience base willing to watch him headline films. In such a scenario, taking on projects with considerable budgets becomes a risky gamble, potentially leading to repeated setbacks.

The concern deepens when looking at his previous outing, Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi, which performed even worse. These back-to-back disappointments are slowly impacting the reputation he carefully built as a director. If this trend continues, it could also cast a shadow on his upcoming directorial projects, including Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi 2.

Tharun Bhascker doesn’t necessarily need to follow a conventional commercial path, but it may be time to reassess his priorities. Focusing on direction — where his strengths clearly lie — and being more selective about lead acting roles could help him regain momentum and protect his long-term credibility.
