Prabhas’ The Raja Saab Eyes Sankranthi Clash in Tamil Nadu
Prabhas’ much-awaited film The Raja Saab is now gearing up for a grand Sankranthi release next year. Initially planned for a December premiere, the film has been pushed to January. However, the release is expected to face stiff competition in Tamil Nadu, where two other major films are set to arrive around the same time. Distributors in the state usually give priority to local superstars, which could limit the theatre share for Prabhas’ film.
Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is locked for January 9th, while Siva Karthikeyan’s Parashakti is slated to release on January 14th. The producer of The Raja Saab has also announced January 9th as the release date, but the final confirmation is still awaited. With Sankranthi already packed with multiple Telugu releases, Prabhas’ massive stardom may secure the film strong openings in the Telugu states, but cracking the Tamil Nadu market could be a challenge.
Prabhas enjoys a considerable following in Tamil Nadu, yet competing against Vijay and the fast-rising Siva Karthikeyan will not be easy. To secure enough theatres and make a mark, The Raja Saab will need not just star power but also strong word of mouth.
Traditionally, family entertainers dominate the Sankranthi season. With The Raja Saab being a horror drama, it remains to be seen whether the festival audience will embrace this genre in a big way.
