Bamiyan, Afghanistan — In a significant move to combat the ongoing drug trade, authorities in Afghanistan’s Bamiyan province destroyed 10.5 tonnes of illegal narcotics, including opium poppy, hashish, and various substances used in the production of heroin. The contraband, which also included other toxic items, was publicly burned in a ceremony held on Tuesday. The operation, conducted by the provincial counter-narcotics department, highlights Afghanistan’s continued efforts to address the drug trade despite ongoing challenges.
The destruction of these drugs follows a series of anti-narcotics operations across the country. Police in Bamiyan have issued a strict ban on the cultivation of poppy, as well as on drug processing and trafficking activities. Authorities are resolute in their commitment to eradicate drug-related activities within the province.
Earlier this month, Afghanistan’s counter-narcotics efforts led to the discovery of significant drug shipments. On January 14, authorities in Khost province seized 43 kg of illicit drugs, including hashish, and arrested an individual involved in trafficking. This operation, which also uncovered a piece of an AK-47, illustrates the ongoing risks and complexities faced by Afghan law enforcement in curbing drug smuggling activities.
In addition to the Khost operation, a major counter-narcotics action earlier this month in Nangarhar and Kunduz provinces resulted in the seizure of 64 kg of illicit substances, including methamphetamine and hashish. Seventeen individuals were arrested for their involvement in trafficking these drugs. The police continue to make significant strides in preventing the production and smuggling of illicit substances, with numerous arrests made across several provinces, including Laghman, Bamyan, Kapisa, Parwan, and Herat.
Afghanistan’s caretaker government, which has banned poppy cultivation, drug processing, and trafficking, has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating the country’s drug trade. These efforts aim to make Afghanistan drug-free and to prevent the production of narcotics that have long plagued the country’s social and economic fabric. As part of this ongoing campaign, authorities are targeting both large-scale drug production and the extensive network of smuggling operations.
