AR RahmanExplores AI in Music with Virtual Band and Voices of Deceased Singers
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making waves across industries, and cinema is no exception. While Hollywood has led the charge in integrating AI, Indian cinema has also been embracing this technology in recent years. One of the most recent trends in AI has been the use of AI-generated voices of deceased singers in music compositions, a development that has sparked mixed reactions.
Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, known for revolutionizing music in India, has voiced strong concerns about this emerging trend. Speaking about the use of AI voices of popular singers who have passed away, Rahman remarked, “I don’t know who’s going to take responsibility. Some of the songs are so filthy, yet they’re released using the voices of popular singers. This needs to be controlled, or else there will be chaos.” His statement highlights the ethical dilemmas surrounding the usage of AI in music, especially when it comes to the manipulation of deceased artists’ legacies.
Rahman first introduced the Metahumans project in February at the ‘Abundance For The Future by SWFI’ event in Dubai. This initiative demonstrates Rahman’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of music through technology. Having already transformed the Indian music industry over the past three decades, Rahman’s foray into AI-generated music could mark the next big leap in his illustrious career, further blending artificial intelligence with the creative process.
With this project, Rahman is not only embracing the future of music but also addressing the potential dangers of AI’s influence on art, signaling that the balance between creativity and technology needs careful thought.
