Senior star Nandamuri Balakrishna’s much-awaited movie “Akhanda 2” was finally released on December 12, after being postponed from December 5, amid massive expectations. Directed by Boyapati Sreenu, who previously delivered the blockbuster Akhanda, and featuring a background score by SS Thaman, whose work in the first part was widely appreciated, the sequel was anticipated to break records.
Despite the high hype and fanfare, Akhanda 2 received largely negative reviews, which may have affected its long-term box office run. After two weeks, the film reportedly earned around $950K+ in the Overseas circuit, falling short of the $1 million mark. In the Telugu states, trade sources estimate that the movie collected ₹85 crore nett, translating to roughly ₹45+ crore share. Whether this will be considered a safe venture is still debatable, given that these are significant numbers but perhaps below expectations.
Reports suggest that the movie’s pre-release business was much higher, indicating that buyers and exhibitors may still face nearly 50% losses on their investment. This has come as a shock, as even with strong initial collections, distributors may not recover profits, pointing either to overselling of the film or cost-related issues. Rumors claim that Akhanda 2 was made with a budget exceeding ₹150 crores, though producers have not confirmed the figure.
Meanwhile, the makers continue to promote the film in Bollywood, hoping that the Christmas holiday period will provide an additional boost and help improve box office numbers in the coming week.
