Akkineni Naga Chaitanya has been steadily building his career in Telugu cinema, delivering consistent hits with films like Love Story and Tandem. While he has been busy with back-to-back projects, his fans often discuss an unexpected setback in his career—his Bollywood debut, Laal Singh Chaddha.
Starring alongside the versatile Aamir Khan, the film failed to meet expectations at the box office, resulting in significant losses for the producers and distributors, including Aamir himself. After dedicating four years to the project, the film’s poor performance was a huge disappointment for both Chaitanya and Aamir Khan. The setback led Aamir to stay away from films for nearly two years.
In a recent interview, Aamir Khan reflected on the reasons behind the film’s failure. He admitted that overconfidence played a part and that budget miscalculations contributed heavily. Although the initial plan was to keep the budget under ₹80 crores, expenses unexpectedly escalated to around ₹200 crores. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Aamir ensured his team was paid, but delays in filming, overseas shoots, and costly shoots in China further inflated the budget.
He also candidly mentioned that the film’s story structure, which focused more on characters than the main plot, made it less appealing to the mass audience. He had anticipated collections of around ₹120 crores, but the final outcome fell short. Aamir admitted that his overconfidence was a mistake and that he avoided taking the usual budget-cutting measures during production.
This string of disappointments hasn’t stopped with Laal Singh Chaddha. His recent film Sitaare Zameen Par did not achieve the expected success, and even the much-anticipated Coolie, co-starring Rajinikanth, underperformed. For Aamir Khan, a series of setbacks continues, highlighting that even the most seasoned actors can face unpredictable outcomes in cinema.
