Akshay Kumar, one of Bollywood’s most consistent star heroes, continues his pursuit of a box office comeback through remakes. Despite a string of unsuccessful attempts post-pandemic, the actor is gearing up for yet another remake — this time of the Malayalam thriller Oppam, which originally starred Mohanlal and was a commercial success in Kerala.
In recent years, Akshay has ventured into multiple remakes that failed to strike a chord with the audience. His remake of Kanchana titled Laxmii and the adaptation of the Tamil hit Ratsasan as Cutputli were both released directly on OTT platforms, receiving lukewarm responses. Similarly, Bachchhan Paandey, a remake of Jigarthanda, and Selfiee, a remake of Driving License, didn’t make the expected impact at the box office. His most recent remake, Sarfira — based on the acclaimed Tamil film Soorarai Pottru — also struggled to create buzz.
Now, despite the setbacks, Akshay Kumar is set to take on the challenge of remaking Oppam, a crime thriller known for its gripping narrative and powerful lead performance by Mohanlal. Interestingly, there were earlier rumours that Saif Ali Khan would headline the Hindi remake, but recent developments confirm Akshay’s involvement in the project.
While Oppam was a big hit in Malayalam, it remains to be seen whether the Hindi version will be able to recreate the same magic, especially given the current trend of remakes not resonating well with Bollywood audiences.
