Rajamouli Might Have His Own IMAX Plans for Varanasi

A day after teasing fans with mysterious hoardings in Varanasi showing only a date, the makers of SS Rajamouli’s globe-trotting action-adventure Varanasi have officially announced that the film will release on April 7, 2027.

Rajamouli, along with the lead cast, shared an official poster featuring a blazing asteroid-like object striking Earth, creating an apocalyptic explosion, hinting at the film’s grand scale. The poster confirms a global release on the announced date.

Domestically, collections are expected to benefit from the Ugadi festival and the summer holiday season. However, trade insiders express concerns about overseas openings due to the mid-week release and the lack of special offers for Tuesday premieres in North America.

Varanasi is being shot using advanced large-format technology to enhance the theatrical experience, especially on IMAX screens. The team aims to maximize IMAX availability overseas, although competition from Hollywood tentpoles like Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and other Disney and Universal releases in late March and mid-April may limit initial screen counts internationally.

Rajamouli’s focus on a wide IMAX release is likely why the release date was announced over 15 months in advance. The film stars Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Priyanka as Mandakini, and Prithviraj as the main antagonist, Kumbha. While a strong worldwide opening is anticipated, final box office collections will depend on several factors, including overseas screen availability.
