Once upon a time, Allari Naresh used to release five to six films a year. Being a comedy star and working in low-budget projects made things easier—directors and producers would approach him nonstop, and most films brought in solid profits. But that era of full-length comedy films has faded, and Naresh himself has shifted his style over the years. He is now exploring new genres and taking up key roles in star-hero movies. Naturally, many fans have been wondering whether the “old Allari Naresh” will ever return.
But Naresh himself has clarified that it may not be possible anymore.
He revealed that comedy writers and directors have drastically reduced in recent years. “Everyone is now focusing on big films and serious storytelling. Many people look down on comedy these days, as if it’s not a worthy genre,” he said. According to him, only those who’ve worked in comedy truly understand how tough it is. “To make people laugh naturally is an art. It’s not easy at all.”
Naresh added that audiences today have become extremely sensitive. “We can’t crack jokes freely anymore. Even a simple joke can hurt someone’s sentiments. That fear always hangs over us,” he explained. Films like Seema Sastri and Kithakithalu may not even get made today, he said. “The era of counters and punchy comic lines is gone. Back then, people would erupt laughing. Now if we deliver a counter, people react blandly—mainly because social media has already exposed them to every kind of joke.”
According to him, modern comedy must come purely through the story, not from gimmicks. He confirmed that his next two films will follow this approach—story-driven comedy without outdated tropes.
Naresh also mentioned his desire to direct movies in the future. “Maybe after two or three years,” he said. But he is aware of the challenges: “As an actor, I can do two or three films a year. But as a director, it takes at least one and a half years to make a film. And once I direct a movie, people may think I will interfere in their scripts. That fear exists in the industry.” Because of these reasons, he says he is staying away from direction for now.
