YSRCP senior leader and former minister Ambati Rambabu has once again criticised the TDP government for pursuing its plan to develop Amaravati as the state’s single and primary capital. Addressing the media, Ambati reiterated that the YSRCP continues to support the three-capitals policy, while the TDP remains firm on its single-capital vision.
Ambati accused the TDP of making lofty promises about creating a world-class capital, questioning why Andhra Pradesh needs such a massive project at this stage. He even asked whether the state is “bigger than Delhi” to justify a capital of global scale. However, his remarks have sparked debate, as many citizens recall that during the YSRCP’s five-year tenure, the capital issue remained unresolved. Despite repeated assurances about three capitals, no substantial development took place in Amaravati, leaving the region neglected and progress stagnant.
With the Chandrababu Naidu government now pushing to revive Amaravati and attract investments, criticism from YSRCP leaders has not been well-received by the public. Many people feel such comments overlook the fact that Andhra Pradesh suffered major losses after bifurcation, including Hyderabad and key assets. For a state that had to rebuild from the ground up, establishing a robust and aspirational capital is closely tied to identity, development, and self-respect.
While Ambati maintained that decentralised development is ideal, his remarks have drawn mixed reactions. As the new government accelerates efforts to rejuvenate Amaravati, a large section of the public believes the priority should be on rebuilding a strong capital rather than questioning its necessity.
