ED Attaches ₹10.11 Cr Assets of Director Shankar in Copyright Case
Ace filmmaker Shankar, once known for his cinematic brilliance, is currently going through a rough phase in his career. His recent films have struggled at the box office, and now, adding to his woes, he is facing legal action over a copyright case related to one of his most iconic films.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), Chennai, has provisionally attached three immovable properties registered under Shankar’s name, amounting to ₹10.11 crore. This action was taken on 17th February 2025 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.
The case stems from a long-standing copyright dispute filed by writer Aarur Tamilandan in 2011. The writer alleged that Shankar’s blockbuster film Robo was heavily inspired by his book Jiguba. After years of investigation, legal action has finally been initiated, linking the case to the director’s earnings from the film. Reports suggest that Shankar received a remuneration of ₹11.5 crore for the project, and now, the ED has moved to attach assets worth ₹10.11 crore in connection with the case.
With the case taking a serious turn, all eyes are on how legal proceedings will unfold and whether the complainant will receive due compensation. Given the high-profile nature of the case, further developments are expected in the coming days.
