As we’ve reported several times before, gambling addiction is becoming a growing problem in the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The issue has worsened significantly, particularly during the IPL and cricket season, with an increasing number of individuals engaging in sports betting.
Despite efforts by both state governments, such as geo-tagging and area-specific restrictions, the problem continues to spread. However, in a positive shift, the Andhra Pradesh government’s top leadership has now taken notice of the severity of the issue.
IT Minister Nara Lokesh has recently spoken out about the growing concerns surrounding gambling addiction. Lokesh strongly emphasized that the government is formulating robust measures to eradicate the betting culture in the state. He remarked, “Betting apps are ruining lives. Every day, I hear heart-wrenching stories of young people spiraling into despair due to their gambling addiction. This cannot continue.”
He further mentioned that the long-term solution lies in raising awareness and taking stringent action against betting apps. “We are working on a comprehensive anti-betting policy that will serve as a model for the entire nation. We are exploring all legal avenues to put an end to this menace,” said Lokesh.
The Andhra Pradesh government has confirmed its commitment to developing a thorough anti-betting policy, with the intention of setting an example for the country.
Disturbing reports of students and middle-aged individuals taking their own lives due to severe financial losses from betting have become an alarming regularity. It is crucial that Lokesh continues to focus on this issue and ensures the implementation of a strong legal framework to combat this dangerous trend.
