Anirudh Strikes Back with Vetri Maaran’s Arasan

Celebrated music composer Anirudh Ravichander has faced some criticism in recent months for not living up to his usual standards. Following Devara, his subsequent works — including Vettaiyan, Vidaamuyarchi, Kingdom, Coolie, and Madharasi — failed to make a strong impact. Except for the “Monica” song and a few background score moments in Coolie, none of these projects truly reflected Anirudh’s immense potential.

However, after a brief lull, Anirudh seems to have regained his spark with his latest work for “Arasan.” The five-minute promo of this Silambarasan-starrer period action drama, released yesterday, opened to a highly positive response. The audience, in particular, showered praise on Anirudh for his powerful background score, which perfectly complemented the tone of the film.

Arasan marks the first collaboration between Anirudh and acclaimed filmmaker Vetri Maaran, known for his realistic storytelling and content-driven cinema. Vetri typically avoids the use of exaggerated slow-motion sequences or loud background scores to elevate his heroes — quite the opposite of Anirudh’s energetic and mass-appeal style. This makes Arasan an interesting creative challenge for Anirudh, who has so far managed to strike the right balance in the promo.

It will be fascinating to see how Anirudh’s music integrates into the full film, especially since Vetri Maaran usually prioritizes narrative depth over musical elevation. If Anirudh can carve out his own space within Vetri’s grounded cinematic world, Arasan might well mark his grand musical comeback.

Produced by V Creations, Arasan will also release simultaneously in Telugu as “Samrajyam,” a part of the Vada Chennai Universe. The film is slated for a worldwide release in 2026.
