Anu Emmanuel is in a reflective phase of her career — one that’s less about glamour and more about growth. After years of appearing in glossy commercial films, she’s decided to take a step back and redefine what matters to her as an actress.
At a recent press meet in Hyderabad for The Girlfriend, Anu spoke candidly about her shift in mindset. “For a long time, I felt like something was missing,” she said. “This film gave me real satisfaction — something I hadn’t felt in years.”
In The Girlfriend, directed by Rahul Ravindran and starring Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty, Anu plays Durga — a role she describes as authentic and grounded. “It’s a film that says something meaningful about women. I even dubbed for myself to make it feel real. When I watched it in theatres and saw boys clapping for certain scenes, I knew it connected.”
Reflecting on her past choices, Anu admitted that many of her earlier films didn’t challenge her. “In some of them, I just danced, said a few lines, and that’s it. Those roles never gave me satisfaction,” she confessed with a small smile. “Now, I don’t want to do such films anymore.”
She added that she’s in no rush to chase opportunities. “If a story excites me, I’ll do it. Otherwise, I’m fine waiting,” she said calmly. Anu also revealed that she’s already signed a new project, with details to be announced soon.
For now, Anu Emmanuel seems content walking her own path — choosing roles that make her happy, rather than ones that just look good on posters.
