Andhra Pradesh Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh on Sunday announced that the State government is actively working on comprehensive plans for the development of Telugu cinema. Addressing the media, the Minister emphasized the importance of nurturing the film industry in the post-bifurcation landscape.
“We are well aware of the diverse terrain and rich potential of Andhra Pradesh. Unlike Telangana, our State boasts some of the most picturesque and biodiverse locations suitable for film shoots. However, despite regular filming, Andhra Pradesh still lacks the necessary film infrastructure,” the Minister said.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, the government is formulating a dedicated film policy. This includes the establishment of film studios, dubbing and re-recording theatres, and other core infrastructure aimed at making Andhra Pradesh a prominent hub for Telugu cinema.
Minister Durgesh revealed that Visakhapatnam is poised to become a major cinematic center, modeled on the lines of Hyderabad, with all essential infrastructure. The government also reaffirmed its commitment to relaunching the prestigious Nandi Awards and implementing welfare measures for the growth and recognition of talent in the Telugu film industry.
“A comprehensive meeting will soon be held with artistes, filmmakers, producers, and key stakeholders to chart out the roadmap for these initiatives,” he added.
The Nandi Awards, once considered the highest honor for excellence in Telugu cinema, theatre, and television, have been stalled for years due to political transitions and administrative delays, particularly after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in 2014.
Since the bifurcation, the awards have remained exclusive to the Andhra Pradesh government, while Telangana has yet to formally institute its own version. In 2024, Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy had announced plans to introduce the ‘Gaddar Awards’ to recognize cinematic talent. However, no concrete action has followed.
With Andhra Pradesh now taking decisive steps under its new leadership, the Telugu film fraternity is hopeful that long-awaited reforms and recognitions — including the revival of the Nandi Awards — will soon materialize.
