Apple Leadership Shake-Up: Johny Srouji Elevated as Chief Hardware Officer

Apple has announced a series of major executive leadership changes as it enters a new phase of organisational restructuring and transition.

The most significant shift includes the departure of CEO Tim Cook in September, with John Ternus set to take over as Apple’s next chief executive. Alongside this transition, Apple has elevated Johny Srouji to the role of Chief Hardware Officer (CHO), giving him oversight of the company’s entire hardware engineering ecosystem, including silicon, iPhone, Mac, and future device development.

Srouji, who previously served as Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, has been with Apple since 2008. During his tenure, he played a key role in developing Apple’s custom silicon strategy, starting with the A4 chip and later advancing technologies across Apple silicon, batteries, cameras, storage controllers, sensors, displays, and cellular modems.

Commenting on his contribution, Tim Cook said Srouji has been “instrumental in driving Apple’s silicon strategy,” adding that his impact has been felt not only within Apple but across the wider tech industry. Cook also praised his leadership, noting that his teams have consistently delivered breakthrough innovations that shaped Apple’s product lineup.

Srouji, in an internal memo to employees, expressed enthusiasm about his expanded role and the consolidation of hardware teams. “I am excited to bring these teams together, to integrate them further, and to help us innovate in an even bigger way than we already do,” he wrote.

As part of the restructuring, Apple has merged its hardware engineering and hardware technologies divisions into a single organisation. This unified structure has been divided into five core teams:

Hardware Engineering – Led by Tom Marieb, responsible for Apple devices such as iPhone and Mac
Silicon – Led by Sri Santhanam, overseeing Apple’s custom chip development
Advanced Technologies – Led by Zongjian Chen, focusing on future and experimental innovations
Platform Architecture – Led by Tim Millet, aligning hardware and software integration
Project Management – Led by Donny Nordhues, ensuring timely execution of projects

The restructuring is aimed at improving coordination across hardware divisions and accelerating innovation across Apple’s product ecosystem.
