Apple has unveiled a new method for training its artificial intelligence models that promises to enhance performance without compromising user privacy. This innovative approach, outlined in a recent blog post on Apple’s Machine Learning Research website and reported by Bloomberg, will be rolled out in beta versions of iOS 18.5 and macOS 15.5.
Historically, Apple has utilized synthetic data—artificially generated messages—as the foundation for training its AI systems, including tools for writing assistance and email summarization. While this approach effectively safeguarded user privacy, it had limitations in accurately capturing the nuances of real-world language use, leading to less precise AI models.
The newly introduced method aims to bridge this gap by combining synthetic data with real user content in a privacy-conscious manner. Here’s how the process works: Apple generates thousands of artificial emails on common topics and converts these into “embeddings,” which are data representations that capture the essence of the content. These embeddings are then distributed to a small number of devices participating in Apple’s Device Analytics program.
On each eligible device, a limited set of recent user emails is compared with the synthetic messages. This comparison occurs entirely on the device, ensuring that no actual email content is accessed or stored by Apple. Using differential privacy, only anonymized signals regarding the most frequently selected synthetic messages are sent back to Apple, preserving the user’s anonymity.
The results of this private comparison help Apple refine its AI models, improving functionalities like email summaries and writing suggestions. By integrating real user behavior with synthetic data, Apple can enhance the accuracy of its AI systems while maintaining a strong commitment to privacy.
Although it remains to be seen whether this new method will enable Apple to compete with leading AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini 2.0, the company’s privacy-first approach positions it uniquely in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
In sum, Apple’s strategy marks a significant step forward in AI development, offering a blend of cutting-edge machine learning techniques with a steadfast dedication to protecting user data—a key differentiator in the increasingly competitive AI race.
