Vetrimaran on Filmmaking: ‘I’m Here to Tell Stories, Not Chase Expectations
Acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaran, known for his grounded storytelling and critical successes such as Asuran and Visaranai, recently opened up about his filmmaking philosophy in a candid conversation with noted film critic Bharadwaj Rangan. Known for crafting powerful narratives that resonate deeply with audiences, Vetrimaran offered rare insight into his creative process, evolving mindset, and how he navigates the weight of audience and industry expectations.
When asked whether he feels pressured to replicate the massive success of Asuran, the National Award-winning director made it clear that repetition is not his style. “On a personal level, I may not be able to deliver if someone expects the same result from me again. I wouldn’t want to tread the same path repeatedly,” he remarked. Instead, he emphasized his desire to keep reinventing his storytelling and simplifying his approach with each new project.
Despite a career spanning over 15 years and a string of critically and commercially successful films, Vetrimaran remains grounded in his intent. “I don’t want to do a film for its numbers, scale, or magnitude,” he said. “I just want to simplify things.” Following Asuran, he even contemplated working on a smaller film with an actor free from the weight of expectations, underlining his belief in content over scale.
Addressing the buzz surrounding Vaadivasal, his upcoming collaboration with actor Suriya, Vetrimaran responded thoughtfully when asked about the inevitable expectations that come with such a powerful team-up. “I am not responsible for the expectations people place on me. I am here only to make films,” he stated firmly. While Tamil cinema continues its quest for pan-India recognition, Vetrimaran believes the focus should remain on telling stories that are culturally and emotionally relevant.
With his ability to balance artistic integrity and audience appeal, Vetrimaran continues to be one of the most distinctive voices in Indian cinema. His refusal to be boxed in by commercial pressures reinforces his commitment to meaningful storytelling—something his growing base of discerning viewers has come to deeply admire.
