Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg tragically passed away in Singapore on September 19 following a swimming accident. Reports suggest he entered the water without a life jacket after removing it, claiming it was oversized and uncomfortable. A short while later, he was found floating in the sea. Despite immediate CPR and being rushed to Singapore General Hospital, doctors declared him dead.

His mortal remains were flown back to India and received at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, and senior officials. From there, the body was transported to Guwahati, where thousands of grieving fans gathered to pay their last respects.

The atmosphere in Guwahati was filled with sorrow as people lined the streets, chanting Garg’s famous song Maya Bini, just as he had once requested fans to sing for him after his passing. Even on-duty police personnel were seen softly singing his songs while managing the overwhelming crowds. A scuffle broke out at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport due to the massive gathering, forcing police to resort to mild lathi-charge to control the situation.

Fans showered flowers on the ambulance carrying his casket, while many shopkeepers shut down their establishments as a mark of tribute. The singer’s body was later taken to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, where thousands continued to pay homage.

The Assam Cabinet is expected to finalize the details of his last rites after consulting with his family and various organizations. Zubeen Garg’s untimely demise has left an irreplaceable void in the cultural and musical fabric of Assam, with fans remembering him not only for his songs but also for the deep emotional bond he shared with them.
