Former cricketer and senior Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin has officially joined the Telangana cabinet headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. Following his oath-taking last week, there was widespread speculation that he might be allotted the Home portfolio. However, the government has now clarified his official responsibilities through a new notification.
Azharuddin has been entrusted with two crucial portfolios — Minority Welfare and Public Enterprises. While the Minority Welfare Department has been a longstanding administrative wing, the Public Enterprises Department is a newly created ministry, marking a first in the history of Telangana and even the undivided Andhra Pradesh. Political observers believe this strategic move is aimed at giving Azharuddin a distinct identity and focused role within the cabinet.
With these new assignments, Azharuddin is set to embark on his ministerial journey. The Minority Welfare Department will enable him to oversee initiatives and welfare schemes that directly impact minority communities — including support for Haj pilgrims, educational scholarships, and loan assistance for minority youth.
Meanwhile, the Public Enterprises Department is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting employment, innovation, and entrepreneurship through state-run enterprises and public-sector collaborations.
Though the highly anticipated Home Ministry did not come his way, Azharuddin’s inclusion in the cabinet and the nature of his portfolios underline the Revanth Reddy government’s confidence in his leadership skills and his ability to bridge communities across Telangana’s social spectrum.
