‘Baahubali: The Epic’, a freshly re-edited director’s cut combining both original parts, hit the screens amid immense buzz and sky-high expectations. However, despite the hype, the film’s performance has been underwhelming both domestically and overseas.
In the USA, collections have reportedly stalled around $900K, with distributors making efforts to push it past the $1 million mark. Surprisingly, the response from Hindi and other regional audiences has been lukewarm, showing limited interest in this new edit.
Even the much-anticipated attempt to attract Hollywood audiences through premium-format screenings didn’t yield the expected results. Though marketed as a global cinematic experience, the film—not dubbed into English—failed to create strong traction internationally. A handful of Hollywood media reviews appeared through promotional tie-ups, but they did little to boost the film’s fortunes.
Industry insiders note that had Baahubali: The Epic turned into a success, it could have served as a launchpad for S.S. Rajamouli’s next global project, tentatively titled Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu.
Nonetheless, Rajamouli remains one of Indian cinema’s most visionary filmmakers and a master strategist who continues to keep Telugu cinema in the global spotlight, regardless of box office outcomes.
