Nandamuri Balakrishna, who recently celebrated his 65th birthday on June 10, continues to prove that age is merely a number when passion and dedication lead the way. Speaking at his birthday celebrations with his trademark charm, Balakrishna quipped, “I don’t want to reveal my exact age — I don’t believe in these numbers. My life is an open book. My fans know everything about me — even my mobile number,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
Taking a trip down memory lane, Balakrishna shared an interesting incident from his younger days involving his iconic father, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR). “After completing my intermediate exams, my father asked if I had written the MBBS entrance exam. I was stunned because he had always guided me towards acting! Still, I applied, received the hall ticket just an hour before the exam, and ended up randomly ticking boxes on the answer sheet,” he recalled with a hearty laugh.
Years later, Balakrishna finally donned a doctor’s coat — not in a hospital, but on the silver screen. “In Simha, I played a doctor for the first time,” he said. Interestingly, around that same period, he also stepped into a significant real-life role as a management trustee of the Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital, named in memory of his mother. Reflecting on this, he said, “Things just happened on their own, without any planning.”
With a remarkable career spanning over five decades, Balakrishna proudly stated, “I am the only actor in the world to play a hero for 50 years. It’s a unique, unmatched journey, and I owe it all to the blessings of my parents.” His recent Padma Vibhushan award, he admitted, is one of the highest honors of his life.
Balakrishna’s hunger for challenges remains undiminished. The actor-politician emphasized the importance of continuous growth, saying, “We must keep sharpening our minds and taking up good roles. I’ve also had the privilege of serving as an MLA three times.”
Recalling his dedication to his craft, Balakrishna spoke about the extreme conditions he faced while shooting Akhanda 2. “We filmed in freezing 4-degree temperatures in Georgia. I was wearing only a dhoti and shirt while everyone else was wrapped in jackets. I didn’t wear a shawl or coat — maybe I’m blessed,” he smiled.
As he embarks on yet another chapter of his illustrious journey, Balakrishna remains a towering figure — not just in Telugu cinema, but also in public service — continuing to inspire fans with his passion, resilience, and indomitable spirit.
