Zeeshan Baloch, a 21-year-old student from Khudabadan, Panjgur in Balochistan, was found dead on Monday morning after reportedly being abducted by a Pakistan-backed death squad, according to the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC).
In a statement issued by the BYC, the organisation confirmed that Zeeshan’s body, bearing multiple gunshot wounds, was discovered near the Surdu Ghareeb Nawaz Hotel around 9:00 a.m. The incident has sparked outrage among human rights groups and local communities, who allege ongoing state-sponsored violence in the region.
Zeeshan was abducted late Sunday evening from Football Chowk in Panjgur. In response, his family held a sit-in protest on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) road, demanding his immediate release and raising concerns about his safety. Despite public appeals, his body was recovered less than 24 hours later.
Zeeshan was the son of Zaheer Ahmed, who has been missing since April 13, 2015, following his own enforced disappearance. According to the BYC, the family had faced repeated threats due to their peaceful activism, including campaigns to secure Zaheer Ahmed’s release.
“The tragic murder of Zeeshan highlights the generational trauma inflicted upon Baloch families through systemic repression and enforced disappearances,” the BYC said. “The very son who campaigned for his father’s return has now become the latest victim.”
Human rights group Paank also condemned Zeeshan’s abduction and killing, holding the Pakistan Army and affiliated militias responsible. Paank highlighted Zeeshan’s active involvement in raising awareness about enforced disappearances, including his participation in a long march to Islamabad.
Both BYC and Paank have renewed their calls for international human rights organisations to take urgent action to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Balochistan.
