Bhairavam Director Faces Backlash Ahead of Release

Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas, Manchu Manoj, and Nara Rohith are coming together for the upcoming Telugu film Bhairavam, directed by Vijay Kanakamedala. While the film is gearing up for a grand release on May 30th, its director has landed in the middle of a major controversy that’s gaining traction in both film and political circles.

An old Facebook post from 2011, attributed to Vijay Kanakamedala, has resurfaced and is now drawing heavy criticism from fans of the Mega family. The post features a morphed meme of Megastar Chiranjeevi and Mega Powerstar Ram Charan in a parody of the Hindi film Paa, renamed as Chaa. The meme came with captions like “Samajika Nyayam presents – A very rare Father-Son and Son-Father story” and “Written and directed by Allu Aravind,” clearly mocking Chiranjeevi’s political move of merging his Praja Rajyam Party with the Congress. Though the post was likely made during a time when memes were casually shared online without much thought, it has now deeply offended fans, especially given Vijay’s past work with Pawan Kalyan on Gabbar Singh and his cordial relations with Sai Dharam Tej.

The situation worsened after Vijay offered a public apology via his X (formerly Twitter) account, claiming that his profile may have been compromised back then. However, fans quickly pointed out that he wasn’t a celebrity at the time, questioning the logic behind the hacking claim. This explanation failed to convince many and instead intensified the online trolling, sparking a trend with the hashtag #BoycottBhairavam.

Adding fuel to the fire, the director made a statement during a recent promotional event in Eluru that stirred political tensions. He remarked, “There is someone always to protect Dharma. Exactly one year ago, there came a person to protect Dharma. Similarly, Kala Bhairava will come to save Dharma in our film.” The comment was widely perceived as a veiled reference to the recent political shift in Andhra Pradesh, with some interpreting it as support for the return of TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu. Given that Nara Rohith, who belongs to the TDP family, is one of the film’s leads, this interpretation gained further traction.

These dual controversies—one rooted in the past and the other triggered by a recent political remark—have put Vijay Kanakamedala and Bhairavam under heavy scrutiny. Whether or not the backlash will affect the film’s performance at the box office remains to be seen, but the lead-up to its release has already become highly charged and contentious.
