Telangana’s power sector has successfully managed an additional load of nearly 7,000 MW caused by the impact of El Niño, Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka said on Wednesday. He stated that the state handled an unprecedented rise in electricity demand during the monsoon season through effective planning and continuous efforts by power department officials.
During a review meeting at the Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (NPDCL) headquarters in Hanumakonda, Bhatti Vikramarka revealed that the state’s peak power demand, which normally remains around 11,000 MW during the monsoon period, increased sharply to nearly 16,500 MW, reaching levels usually witnessed during summer.
The Energy Minister also pointed out that around 2,000 MW of hydel power generation was affected due to reduced water availability in irrigation projects. Despite these challenges, power utilities ensured uninterrupted electricity supply across Telangana, he said.
Clarifying the situation regarding power disruptions, Bhatti Vikramarka said there are no scheduled power cuts in the state. He explained that only temporary interruptions occur during extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall and strong winds, which can damage electricity lines and infrastructure.
He further stated that the government is working on strengthening discoms by restructuring old high-interest loans and aims to transform NPDCL and SPDCL into some of the best-performing power distribution companies in the country.
As part of improving consumer services, Telangana has introduced an “electricity ambulance” initiative, which is the first of its kind in the state. Under this system, consumers can call the toll-free number 1912, where AI-based technology will register complaints and immediately alert field teams for faster resolution.
Highlighting welfare initiatives, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government has provided ₹1.20 crore insurance coverage for line staff in case of accidental deaths while on duty, along with safety equipment and uniforms.
He also noted that under the Gruha Jyothi scheme, the government is covering electricity bills up to 200 units for around 53 lakh households. Additionally, the state is providing an annual subsidy of nearly ₹14,000 crore for around 30 lakh agricultural pump sets, supporting farmers across Telangana.
